Now, having a ski trip on the calendar probably wasn't the most sensible thing to do. But I built the plan so it was a step back week and I do have to have some fun or I'll lose my mind right? Well it turns out skiing all day, going to Apres ski parties at night, not getting enough sleep, and eating nachos for a weekend is a HORRIBLE idea when you are training for an Ironman. Wow when I write it all down it feels so much worse. But we were flying back Sunday night and I could feel my stomach starting to tense up. And then I wasn't hungry for dinner. Neither are great signs right?
Well by the time I got home, I was pretty cold so I tried to take a shower to warm up and from that point on, I didn't stop shivering until 4am the next morning. I turned the heat up to 75, cranked my space heaters, layered up, and put 2 blankets on and I still found myself breathing into my blanket so I could feel the warmth from my breath. Things got worse in other ways, but those aren't details for this blog. Needless to say, I was sidelined.
So Monday morning I wake up and think, ok maybe that was jsut food poisening and by tomorrow I'll be fine. So I rejigger my training plan in my head. Monday night rolls around - symptoms are back. Not as severe but definitely back. OK well surely I'll be fine when I wake up? Nope. Tuesday night the symptoms are back again and even into Wednesday morning. Oh boy this is now a thing. At this point I have mentally crossed off training for the week. I have googled jsut how big a msitake it would be to train with the flu and asked a few triathletes and all reports point to the same thing - REST! If you can't even find an obscure forum on google to say - "Go for it, you'll be fine," you cave in and rest.
But Wednesday afternoon something miraculous happened, I found my appetite again! I also found the symptoms never came Wednesday night - no shivers, no headache, no exhaustion. And this morning - same thing!! So here I am Thursday finally ready to give this working out thing a try again. You can see how I had to rejigger the training plan as the week went on and the sickness persisted:
You'll notice at this point I am also just letting myself ease back in. It has been almost a full week since my last official workout, seems risky to just jump back in so I am going to continue the pattern of rest week leading up to another progression week.
At first I was super bummed about being sick but somehow, this sickness has re-energized me. I found myself craving a good workout. I also found I was starting to get a little bored (I know It was like 3 days but still, as a student about to graduate my schedule doesn't have a ton of demands). So this morning I plugged in my favorite triathlon podcast - The Kona Edge and listened to some super inspirational story about Rob Cummins. He started out as a heavy smoker and drinker and ended up qualifying for Kona! His big message was - even if you aren't sure you can reach the end goal, just start taking steps in the right direction and you might. Then I got a little carried away an entered a raffle for a Kona Slot. Oh that would be a decision to make....
